Arthritis affects over 350 million people worldwide, with around 40 million coming from the US alone. Arthritis is inflammation of one or more joints in your body which leads to pain and stiffness that typically gets worse as you age. While there are many different causes and types of arthritis, the symptoms and treatments tend to be the same. The two most common types of arthritis are osteoarthritis, which occurs over time as the cartilage between joints weakens, and rheumatoid arthritis, which is caused by an autoimmune disorder that targets the lining of joints. Regardless of the cause, the pain is a direct result of swelling, which tends to be worse in weight-bearing joints such as the knees or spine.
There is currently no known cure for arthritis, but successful treatment aims to reduce pain and increase the quality of life. It’s also one of the most significant problems facing public health in America, as reports show arthritis is the leading cause of disability among adults in the US. Making matters worse, around two-thirds of all adults suffering from arthritis are still within “working age” (18-64 years old). As you can imagine, there are plenty of people out there who are in desperate need of something to ease their arthritis-related pain.
